Some welcome removal of fence while others say they felt safer with it, as Councilmember Soto-Martinez vows to work with community on ‘shared goals.’

There remain differing opinions about whether the fence should remain, but the vast majority of park users the Los Angeles Daily News spoke with on Tuesday, March 28, said they were happy to see it come down or did not have a strong opinion either way.

Tuesday morning, she gasped in exhilaration as she passed by a crew taking down sections of the fence and realized what was happening. Fencing contractors take down chain-link fencing around Echo Park Lake two years after a homeless encampment was removed from the park on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Sophie Partida lives across from the park. There were times before the homeless encampment was cleared, she said, when she experienced or witnessed attempted assaults, fights, and late-night noise disturbances. She said she felt safer after the tents were removed and the fence was erected.
