In June, the Texas factory released its first batch of shoes — a backless slipper appropriately named the “.” The $205 shoes, made of a vegetable-tanned saddle leather, sold out within a day, said Ashmore. The 12-person El Paso outpost, said Ashmore, is similar in many ways to the Gaziantep workshop: Both are located in multicultural border towns with histories of craftsmanship. But the El Paso workshop is also a space, Ashmore said, to depart from tradition and experiment with materials, techniques and designs.
