Turkish-style shoemaker Sabah opens its first U.S. footwear factory in El Paso

” — as the site of the inaugural U.S. Sabah factory is the familiarity the Texas town has with the intricacies of leatherwork.

In June, the Texas factory released its first batch of shoes — a backless slipper appropriately named the “.” The $205 shoes, made of a vegetable-tanned saddle leather, sold out within a day, said Ashmore. The 12-person El Paso outpost, said Ashmore, is similar in many ways to the Gaziantep workshop: Both are located in multicultural border towns with histories of craftsmanship. But the El Paso workshop is also a space, Ashmore said, to depart from tradition and experiment with materials, techniques and designs.

The El Paso factory of shoemaking company Sabah will release its collaboration with Istanbul-based print brand LAR Studio on July 24. Pictured above is the Sahil Baba by LAR. “With anything that you do by hand with a lot of care and integrity, it’s finding and training folks,” said Ashmore.
