Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described social media as one of the main threats to democracy.

The Associated Press

Erdogan's government plans to pursue legislation to criminalize spreading fake news and disinformation online, but critics say the proposed changes would tighten restrictions on free speech. He added: “We try to protect our people, especially the vulnerable sections of our society, against lies and disinformation without violating our citizens’ right to receive accurate and impartial information.”

The new legislation would make the dissemination of “disinformation” and “fake news” criminal offenses punishable by up to five years in prison, according to pro-government media reports. It also would establish a social media regulator.

Then why he is on twitter and fb ?

He is right, it is.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

One of main problems with social media being a distributor of news is that they decide what news one can read and what news they want to propagandise.

Wow. Social media is 1st a threat for him, since he cannot control it. This statement may precede some limitation to freedom. Second he’s a threat for democracy himself. But very nice of him to be concerned.

Not quite so sir, Mr President.

To be expected of a dictator

But is he? Or is it the US’s nonstop wars? Seems like we have crushed so many countries just in the last 10 years I lost count.

alas it is and it seems as astute of a claim it is, he is deluded toward the real problem: silencing political opponents, but him being in the situation he is in, it is obvious he is just using this convenient truth to further his control and the turks just let it happen....

Pot calling kettle black.

To what he calls democracy!!! “As long as 51% aka religious morons keep electing me, I can do whatever I want” democracy

No really

Maybe. But we know Erdogsn is definitely a threat.

He's not wrong

Erdogan himself is one of the main threats to democracy in Turkey, free the innocent people from your prisons, the people that you and your party is trying to gagging their mouths

Gosh, for Turkey’s Erdogan to say that social media is a threat to democracy makes one wonder if he thinks it may be a threat to whatever definition of government Turkey is being run under, also.

Very true 😕

Erdogan says: MISINFORMATION on social media is a threat to society. Innocent people got lynched to death in several countries because of fake information on Facebook Twitter is the hub of false information. Civil unrest, riots, looting. Erdogan is right on that.

I would argue that he is the biggest threat to democracy in Turkey.

Kime yama olacagini sapitti iyice teyyo

An informed public is any governments greatest fear.

Erdogan be like

LOL. While he has a point, he is a bigger threat to democracy in Turkey
