WASHINGTON—A flurry of global events in recent weeks shows how the Trump administration is wielding U.S. economic might—through tariffs, sanctions and other means—as a geopolitical weapon for battles with adversaries and allies alike.
The strategy has reaped some short-term gains, though the risks include the potential for a loss of global influence in the longer term.
The usa will ahve to suffer from the worst karma Trump have committed before he knew.
Imagine being such a p.o.s. youd look down on us for putting tariffs on places that do it to us.
Trump sets up a 'problem' - then he 'fixes it'👎
Really? Oh crystal ball!
How so? No one knows the long term scenario. EU and China have bilked that US for Trillions for decades.
So better to have lost influence but keep trillions in dollars? Americans choose the former.
He don‘ tunde estand
Economic blackmail totally works. Biden used it to get a Ukrainian AG to drop an investigation into a company that had his son serving on its board of directors. Apparently, it is an impeachable offense if you use economic blackmail for personal, rather than national, gain.
So we can only influence people if we let them screw us over? Maybe the experts are wrong. Again.
This really no story. It is a political endorsement of Trump's crazy trade war!
Always looking for some downside ... no matter how speculative and unfounded? How about: After decades of being a doormat Trump got us off the floor and throwing punches at the cheating crooked commies.
Global influence lol these countries are heavily dependent on the United States and have taken advantage of the American taxpayer for decades they need our money and always will and Trump knows it
As to WSJ news, it was both short- and long-term good situation, when previous WH adm. provided unlimited oppprtunity for foreign businesses to have advantage over the US ones. Trump’s “America First” policy directly contradicts left biased mentality of liberal journalist.
Oh, first it was that America would suffer immediately, then it would be by December and that tariffs never work - now the story is that we will have short gains but nothing long term - the fact is, you don’t know what’s going on and have no clue.
The risks also include the potential for a gain of global influence. In fact, every indication is that global influence is gaining, not waning.
Short term gains like having to pay off US farmers with $30 billion?
That is the history of tariffs. The long term ramifications are what kept countries from using them. Also...using the might of the American taxpayer will always bring short term dividends but all it will do is cause higher prices. They will never come down. They never do.
Zzzzzzz.....🥱
Long term risk was greatly reduced
Meanwhile breaking the bank.
I don’t even need to read this article to tell you it’s wrong. Has anyone else noticed WSJ has taken a left hand turn on its news pages?
realDonaldTrump stops climate change, wsj says it's too cold.
Did being that teeny bit conditionally critical of the president in the backend of your headline hurt?
