Trump to release plan to move U.S. immigration toward 'merit-based system' prioritizing high-skilled workers

By David Nakamura and David Nakamura Reporter covering the White House Email Bio Follow Ashley Parker Ashley Parker White House reporter Email Bio Follow May 15 at 5:10 PM President Trump on Wednesday warned again about the dangers of undocumented immigrants, signaling no plans to temper his rhetoric even as he prepares to unveil a broad proposal aimed at balancing public perception of his administration’s hard line agenda.

“This is his proposal,” said a senior administration official. “He’s been intimately involved in crafting it. We’ve shown him kind of where some of the criticism might come from on the right, and his response is, ‘I’m happy to talk to them and I’ll convince them of why this is the right thing.’” Trump called the perpetrator a “vicious killer” who could have been kept out of the country by a border wall or “whatever the hell it takes.”

Though Trump has voiced support for a pathway to citizenship for many of the nation’s estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, he has sought to pair legalization efforts with hard line enforcement provisions, including a border wall, more Border Patrol officers and change to U.S. laws aimed at speeding up deportations.

And the Washington Post is the darkness making democracy die spreading its falsehood and attacks on the president when he is trying to do what is right for the country

Great idea from realDonaldTrump: Bring in foreign workers to take the high-paying jobs Americans actually DO want!

Will realDonaldTrump deport his wife because nude modeling before marrying into citizenship, wealth & scandal doesn't have much merit?

Ah, so he wants immigrants to take our few high-paying jobs instead of our low-paying jobs?

In other words, Melania and her family would be ineligible. Trump’s mother, too.

Bring us your rich, well-educated, preferably white masses.

Obomo and Bush didn’t do their job

High skilled as determined by?

About time something gets fixed Now onto term limits

👌🏻

Don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with this. Quite a few countries already have this (e.g. Canada). Even tho for Trump it comes from his racism, whoever the next president will be won't roll it back since it makes sense to have it in place.

So if you're poor you can't come in? Yeah, that's really Christian.

There is nothing that shines a better light on the lie that US is 'merit-based' than people who inherited their wealth, i.e. did nothing other than being born to 'merit it', talking about a 'merit-based' system.

you're only surprised if you haven't been paying attention. Trump knows if he doesn't win in 2020, he's indicted. He's pulling out all the stops to unite his base. It's ONLY going to get worse. Brace for impact for the next 18 months.

Merit = money.

Does this mean he has to send Melania back?

Insert FLOTUS joke here.

👏🏼👏🏼NOT. WHAT. AMERICA IS ABOUT 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Great! Coming soon to mow your golf course, a computer scientist!

Funny coming from a man who can’t even spell.

Kyler Murray, chosen 1st in the 2019 NFL Draft, Trump is moving towards merit based Immigration; what say you? It's a trick for example in my case he congratulated the 2nd best; rather than me; the 1st best. So much for meritocracy.

Breaking news anonymous sources report cartels spend a billion a year on us politicians

Farmers are already losing because of Trump's stupid policies. Do you think they can afford to hire lazy American workers that complain about the wages, lack of benefits, long hours, weather conditions, etc. that come with agricultural work? Stupid MAGATs.

So foolish question...so who is going to pick the crops, work in restaurants and hotels and nursing homes and do the jobs that a out of Americans find beneath them?

So, retroactively, MELANIATRUMP would be deported.

Then his wife and in laws should get the hell out

Does this include sex workers.

Shouldn't the high skilled (higher paying) jobs go to our citizens?

Does this mean we can ship dotard back to wherever?

Finally something that makes sense who would want to let a bunch of people in that need welfare, its common sense

Do people seeking asylum have merit? I hope so

Ha! Ha! Ha! Jared Kushner is proposing a merit-based system. Irony is dead!

Wondering how “highly skilled” Trump’s wife and in-laws proved themselves to be to earn citizenship?

can we re-due melania's application

Why not train underemployed Americans & low-income citizens who wold benefit from skills training instead of rewarding immigrants who take the jobs of those Americans who otherwise have no chance or opportunity to get ahead without needed skills in today's environment! USA 1st?

Because we need high-skilled workers to pick crops, clean houses, do manual labor? This is just a sham to punish immigrants from South of our border in favor of Swedes

What about businesses, like crabbing, which rely on a seasonal labor force?

Merit based. Willing to work at Trump properties

Sounds like Trump is trying to become an autocrat and prejudge people. Not going to happen.

Only Russian oligarchs...

*white *non-shitty countries

What a piece of crap this man is.

I will support it if we can retroactively deport the unskilled Trump family.

Does this mean your wife is out? 🤔

I hate merit-based systems!
