The trial for Donald Trump's election-related case in Washington, D.C., could be the first of the former president's four pending criminal cases to go to trial.

, just five months after Trump was indicted on four federal counts that amounted to an alleged scheme to try to overturn the 2020 presidential election results and stay in power, and nearly three years after the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.in an attempt to push the federal trial well past the next election. The former president is currently the leading candidate for the Republican nomination and claimed his prosecution by Smith is part of an attempt to harm his campaign.

Federal judges have broad powers to set trial and hearing schedules in cases over which they preside, and the judge's warning came as Trump was calling the case — and Chutkan herself — into question, calling her on social media"highly partisan" and"very biased and unfair."
