Given Trump’s fear of the deep state and Pompeo’s position as one of his most steadfast advisers, one of the few outside of the Trump family to remain in the president’s good graces, his involvement in the call is far from shocking. Rather, a former ambassador joked that they were more “surprised that Pompeo was so stupid when he went on the Sunday shows professing to not know about the call,” noting’s absence from the Sunday morning news circuit after Benghazi.
Surprising or not, however, Pompeo’s knowledge of the call is certainly significant. As the impeachment inquiry has intensified over the past week, Democrats have ramped up their efforts to glean information on the White House’s handling of these calls and whether President Trump has made other troubling requests or promises to other world leaders.
Despite his best efforts, Pompeo is now fully embroiled in the Ukraine imbroglio. “For weeks he feigned unfamiliarity with a call he had participated in with President Trump and the leader of Ukraine. He withheld critically relevant information from the public, the press, and our elected officials,”a former foreign service officer, said. “This raises serious questions about his conduct and whether he can continue to enjoy the trust of foreign leaders.
