GOP Sen. Barrasso: Trump can't declassify documents by thinking about it

Barrasso, the chair of the Senate Republican Conference and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is one of several GOP senators to criticize the former president for his comments, while others have sidestepped questions.“In terms of national security documents, we have to always use extreme caution," Barrasso said. "I’m on the Foreign Relations Committee — we deal with classified information all of the time — and are always very careful.

“What I do know and what I’d like to see from a Senate standpoint is I’d like to see the Department of Justice come to us and show us, in a classified setting, what the information is and what they’ve done," he added. The big picture:One of Trump's allies, Sen. Lindsey Graham said, "The process is probably more complicated than that."

Sen. Mike Rounds , who sits on the Armed Services Committee, called the handling of classified documents a “very serious” issue, adding, "I think anyone who takes the time to appropriately protect that information and who has taken the time to see what’s in the information would have serious concerns about how items could be accessed if they’re not stored properly."

Senate Minority Whip John Thune told CNN there's a process for declassifying documents that "ought to be adhered to and followed." Sen. Thom Tillis , who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told CNN, "As I understand the Executive Branch requirements, there is a process that one must go through."

brianschatz And Barrasso is usually fine with Trump trying to destroy the country, so if even he isn't OK with this, it's a pretty big problem.

smartdissent And anyone who believes him needs serious help!

Duh

brianschatz Mass delusion in the Republican Party.

brianschatz Why are you misleading people with this tweet? It took him twice to be asked this question, the first time he waffled on and said he didn’t know how docs are declassified (he’s on the intel committee!?!?!!), and then very very reluctantly relented

Ok. So who is above the POTUS on matters of classification? Anyone? What is this 'process' we hear so much about? When did this arbiter of classification get elected?

Again, what are we supposed to do with this? Because now, 6 years too late, these GOP are calling out their dear leader - we're supposed to forget and forgive the horrors the fascist GOP brought down and continues to bring down on us? ?

Trump needs therapy. His terrorist sects are going to jail too

I’m glad this was clarified….

brianschatz This is the new GOP litmus test? Psychic declassification?

brianschatz I assume this means Barrasso will be primaried by a slavering Trumper in 2024. The first rule of Republican is IOKIYAR. The second is thou shalt not criticize Dear Leader Trump. He's violating both.

And in other news, water is wet.

Why am I even seeing this stupidness. Even a ten-year-old would know that.

brianschatz So brave!

brianschatz WOW 🙁... What'ta revelation...🙄🙄🙄🥱

brianschatz There is no bottom.

Sure, after he embarrassed himself trying not to answer the question...he practically mumbled & actually slumped when he finally admitted magical thinking is bullshit F'ing coward

Thanks for clearing that up for us John, now you can get back to destroying this country you spineless bastard

Ohhh. Poor guy will be shunned by his party and will probably get death threats.

Thank you Senator Obvious

Next we’ll have articles because a GOP member finally admits the earth is round. “Oh my, this is a break through..they said something that is built on reality…it’s a first in a verrrrrry long time”

What a proud moment! GOP admitting the obvious!

That's not what he said. He danced around it. ''I’m on the Foreign Relations Committee — we deal with classified information all of the time — and are always very careful. I don’t know anything about the rules for when a president declassifies documents and information.'

Does this even need to be said?

It’s amazing this even needs to be said
