Trump blasts GovRonDeSantis COVID-19 policies, despite encouraging him to back lockdowns

Back in 2020, as COVID-19 ravaged the country, DeSantis was reticent about implementing a statewide lockdown but caved after a call with Trump and a"grave reckoning" about the risks of mass deaths if such an order was not imposed, the New York Times reported. Trump took a swing at DeSantis over the weekend for closing his state during the pandemic.“There are Republican governors that did not close their states; Florida was closed for a long period of time,” Trump said Saturday.

"In concert with the efforts of President Trump and the White House Coronavirus Task Force to fight COVID-19, and based on guidance provided by Florida Surgeon General and State Health Officer, Dr. Scott Rivkees, all persons in Florida shall limit their movements and personal interactions outside of their home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities," the order stated.

“I never thought in February, early March, that [the coronavirus] would lead to locking down the country,” the Republican governor said on the Ruthless podcast last year. “I just didn’t. I didn’t think that was on the radar.”

Analysis | Trump’s opening volley at DeSantis doesn’t make much senseAnalysis: Donald Trump has a growing Ron DeSantis problem. And judging by one of his first big volleys in their prospective 2024 matchup, the former president doesn’t have a lot of cogent ideas for how to combat it. I don’t think Trump has to worry, he has 150 million followers I keep saying that DeSantis has been 'drafting' Trump but at some point he has to come out from that draft to have a chance at getting the lead. Hoping for a crash before the final laps is just not going to work. Trump will be irrelevant by the time it matters.

Analysis | Is DeSantis positioned as more than the anti-Trump?Analysis: The Florida governor is enjoying the benefit of being the challenger — but can he be more than that? If he thinks banning books, shutting down AP courses about race, anti-vax conspiracy theories and 'don't say gay' is going to play with a national electorate, I have a bridge to sell him, aka 'The Brooklyn.' Whoops He is an absolute fascist, racist, human trafficking SOB!
