Analysis: Forest fire management is a complex issue, but one thing is clear: the federal commitment to it has been declining for years, and Trump has done little to reverse it

Jim Lyons is the former USDA undersecretary for natural resources and environment in the Clinton Administration and lecturer at the Yale School of the Environment.

Forest fire management is a complex issue, but one thing is clear: the federal commitment to it has been declining for years, and Trump has done little to reverse it. The federal government’s spending on fire prevention has been shrinking; the budget for vegetation management fell from approximately $240 million in 2001 to $180 million in 2015, a decline of 24 percent.

Along with this shift in resources, there has also been a corresponding shift in staff, with a 39 percent reduction in all staff other than firefighting personnel. As a result, the agency was forced to redirect dollars and staff focused on measures that could reduce the risk of fires by improving forest health. The more money spent on fighting fires, the less was available to prevent them—clearly a “robbing Peter to pay Paul” scenario.

Fixing the funding problem for firefighting was very important. But the long delay in reaching this compromise meant fire prevention efforts lagged for years, allowing the buildup of fire-prone vegetation that will fuel future fires, likely contributing to the fires sweeping through California and the Pacific Northwest today.

If you're thinking of voting for trump..think twice!!

Californians know. Trump doesn’t give a damn about it. We are not important to him.

So, Trump is responsible for rain, sleet, snow ,heat, cold, wind and flooding. Now he failed to clear the underbrush in the forest out west. I wonder if he can part the sea. Get a grip.

I think realDonaldTrump had egg on his face with that one. Only he's too ignorant to have realized it. He's repeated his 'need for better forest management' in effect blaming the victims but Newsom pointed out 57% of burning land is federal, not state, owned land.

The states regulate and control it. Cali worries about trees and endangered species. This is unintended consequences.

Blaming the fires on climate change and on federal govt do not take away the responsibility of the CA govt. What has the CA govt done on forest management? Have they demand the federal govt to act?

What the fuck did Obama & Shit for brains do in 8 years to prevent forest fires? Did they put up Dem Smokey the bear fire danger signs?
