The likely Republican nominee caught flak for saying Black voters liked him for his mug shot, but his campaign is also mounting a more sophisticated appeal.

People watch Donald Trump's motorcade after the former president departed the Fulton County jail Aug. 24 in Atlanta. on his way to being booked at the Fulton County jail in August. From the motorcade, Trump saw Black people lining the streets and watching from balconies. Some were shouting taunts or making obscene gestures. But Trump noticed that many of the people appeared to be waving or cheering — and he took it to mean they supported him, telling advisers he was pleasantly surprised.

Sharpton said he recently told Vice President Harris that the Biden campaign has to do far more to attract Black voters.“They finally understand they need to do something, but they haven’t done enough,” he said of the Biden White House. “They’ve got a lot to do. He has benefited from their lack of being aggressive.”

Campaign advisers say they can target specific and detailed demographic groups, such as Black men who have purchased a gun or regularly attend church. In some cases, the argument might be more about not voting for Biden — persuading voters to stay home. and former housing and urban development secretary Ben Carson, according to people who have spoken to him. None of his senior advisers are Black.

“The economy was better when he was in office,” said Branden Boyd, a Black clothing company owner in Milwaukee who backed Trump in 2020 and said he would support him again in a rematch against Biden.Trump has tried similar strategies in his previous campaigns, putting up modest gains among Black men over previous Republican presidential nominees.

“This is a first step in a sustained effort to reach every voter, in every corner in America,” said Taylor Budowich, who heads the PAC. “Poll after poll has shown voters who traditionally vote Democrat are switching their support to Trump because they want a secure border, growing economy and safe communities.”

Other Black Democrats said the party’s need to do better by one of its major constituencies is separate from the possibility of voting for Trump. Sharpton said the Biden campaign needs to spend more money on advertisements and “more putting out the record” to draw comparisons between “two old White guys.”‘They need more hands in the community’
