Kevin McAleenan, acting Homeland Security Secretary, said the rule will come into effect in 60 days, but legal challenges are expected. He said: “This rule allows the federal government to enforce immigration laws as passed by Congress and ensures that all children in US government custody are treated with dignity, respect, and special concern for their particular vulnerability.”

The new rules could result in immigrant families coming to the U.S. illegally being sent to family detention centers for as long as their case moves through the courts. The administration was widely criticized for separating families who crossed the border illegally last year.
