Troy chasing Sun Belt title on home field Saturday

“We don’t want to be in those situations every week, but … he’s been in big situations,” wide receiver RaJaé Johnson said. “When the head guy comes in and talks to us like that, tells us just ‘make a play,’ we knew from that point on we have a mission at hand.”

“We don’t hide from that goal,” Sumrall said. “We talk about pursuing conference championships, we talk about wanting to win ball games, we talked about wanting to strive to become a premier Group of 5 program in college football. Nevertheless, Troy lost two of its first three games this season, a 28-10 loss to Ole Miss and 32-28 defeat at Appalachian State, a game in which the Mountaineers executed a Hail Mary for a touchdown on the final play. The Trojans haven’t lost since then, however, though they’ve rallied from down at halftime on five occasions.

Coastal relies heavily on the triple option offensively, though Troy got plenty of practice against that scheme in a 10-9 victory over Army on Nov. 12. The Chanticleers operate mostly out of the shotgun, however, whereas Army runs the option from under center. The Trojans trailed that latter game 13-7 at halftime and 19-14 heading into the fourth quarter before exploding for 34 unanswered points. Offensive coordinator Joe Craddock said his team probably can’t afford such a slow start vs. Coastal Carolina.

The Trojans have a chance to win 11 games for the first time since 2017, a season that ended with a conference championship and a victory in the New Orleans Bowl. Sixth-year veterans such as Martial, Stidham and running back DK Billingsley were freshmen being redshirted on that team, but have a chance to go out as key contributors to a Sun Belt championship on Saturday.
