Meteorologists predict that Tropical Storm Isaias will regain its strength before making landfall in South and North Carolina later on Monday—becoming a Category 1 hurricane—as the rest of the U.S. eastern seaboard braces for impact.Isaias, pronounced ees-ah-EE-ahs, is off Florida’s northeastern coast as of Monday morning and slowly crawling northward, and expected to hit South Carolina by the evening., and two island communities in North Carolina’s Outer Banks have been evacuated.
Isaias is expected to regain its strength as a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall Monday evening, but the Weather Channel cautions that its impact is anticipated to be the same regardless of how the storm is labeled.Monday that Isaias could dump as much as eight inches of rain on parts of the Carolinas and the mid-Atlantic region, while winds could gust to 74 mph or higher.
Storm surges of three to five feet are expected during high tide on the upper South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina coasts. Although Isais is anticipated to soak the rest of the East Coast, bringing with it strong winds and possible tornadoes as it moves northward, meteorologists say it will weaken once it makes landfall."Right now, we're hoping this storm will not hit us hard, if it hits at all," South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said Friday."At this time we have no intention at all of declaring any sort of evacuation."What happens as Isaias makes its way north.
