Democratic lawmakers call on Legislature to enact non-discriminatory protections one day after Chambersburg revokes ordinance

. Twenty-two states across the country, including the rest of the northeast, have implemented statewide anti-discrimination protections.

Despite more than three hours of testimony from borough residents imploring the council to keep the ordinance intact, the Republican majority revoked protections for residents against discrimination based on their sexual orientation, ethnicity or gender identity by a 7-3 vote. “All of us that ran in this election to be on council we think we got a mandate from the people,” he said last week. “People we talked to when we were campaigning did not like this ordinance at all.”

Frankel, Sims and Muth noted that in spite of some progress among a small number of municipalities, the majority of the state’s population — 65 percent — lives in municipalities with no protections.
