Defense attorneys say Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr. was a convenient person to blame for a series of unexplained medical emergencies at a North Dallas surgery center.
“They’re just seeing what they want to see,” he told the jury — eight women and six men, including two alternates — which was empaneled Monday afternoon at the Earle Cabell Federal Building in Dallas.Prosecutors allege Ortiz contaminated 1000 milliliter saline IV bags with pharmaceutical stimulants, nerve blockers and anesthetics and placed them in a stainless-steel warmer to be used by fellow doctors during surgeries.
In June 2022, anesthesiologist Melanie Kasper used an IV bag from the facility to treat herself at home for dehydration. She then complained of severe pain and collapsed, a police incident report says. She was pronounced dead in her Lakewood home, and her cause of death was later determined to be from the toxic effects of bupivacaine, a nerve blocker and anesthetic, according to court documents.during surgery to repair a deviated septum in August 2022, according to court documents.
