The 49ers are without an offensive cornerstone during part of Sunday night’s game against the Broncos — and might miss him for the rest of the game, or longer.
Left tackle Trent Williams went down in a heap in the 49ers’ end zone midway through the third quarter on a play that resulted in a safety to narrow the Niners’ lead to 7-5. Williams stayed down on the field, visibly frustrated, for a couple minutes before limping off to the locker room under his own power, declining to ride on a cart that had been brought onto the field. A replay showed that former teammate D.J. Jones had rolled into Williams’ right leg.
The 49ers have not said whether Williams will return to the game, or specified the nature of his injury. On the play, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo dropped back to pass from the San Francisco 1-yard line and backed out of the end zone as he set to throw, which was a positive for the 49ers as Denver’s Bradley Chubb caught Garoppolo’s pass and took the ball into the end zone.
