Thu, March 7th 2024 at 5:34 PM"We were very confident that our community is happy with the progress that we are making and eager to see that progress continue forward," José Garza said. "Money doesn't win elections; people do. And so, based on the conversations that we were having in neighborhoods talking to the community, we felt very confident about the outcome.
Garza led over his opponent, Jeremy Sylestine, by nearly 34 points, based on the final results from the Travis County clerk. Sylestine had the support of several more moderate Democrats, as well as some high-profile figures with conservative ties, who raised more than a million dollars for his campaign.
“I honestly don't spend a lot of time thinking about what the legislature is doing," Garza said to CBS Austin. "And I certainly don't spend any time thinking about Elon Musk. What I will say is that we have seen voters across the country and across the state of Texas, speak out loudly and repeatedly about the need to see reform in our criminal justice system."
"I don't know if Austin is necessarily representative of any sort of national trend, but Austin certainly continues to stand out in Texas as its own place," Joshua Blank, research director with the Texas Politics Project, said. "I think a lot of the criticisms of Garza and more generally were about orientation as a progressive prosecutor and what that meant in terms of how we ran the office.
