Transgender activist Elise Malary determined to have drowned, manner of death unknown

who was pulled from Lake Michigan six days after being reported missing in March, died from drowning police said Thursday even as they continued to investigate her death.

Malary was reported missing by a family member on March 11, and on March 17 her body was recovered from Lake Michigan by the Evanston Fire Department at Garden Park in the 500 block of Sheridan Square, in Evanston, police said in a statement Thursday.On June 13, Evanston police received the findings of the Cook County medical examiner’s office investigation into Malary’s death that stated the cause of her death was “drowning.” The manner of death was classified as “undetermined.

The medical examiner did not find traumatic injuries from at or near the time of death, and the Evanston police investigation has not revealed circumstances indicating foul play, police said.At the time of Malary’s disappearance, police said their investigation indicated Malary’s apartment was unlocked and that there was no sign of forced entry.

Malary was an advocate for transgender rights and was an active member of Chicago’s transgender and queer communities. On March 31, Transgender Day of Visibility,to honor her and Tatiana “Tee Tee” Whetstone, a Black transgender woman who was found dead on March 18. Police on Thursday said they do not have any additional information but that they will continue to investigative leads in an effort to determine the manner of Malary’s death.
