You mentioned experiencing imposter syndrome at various points on your journey. While this is such a common experience, it can be really debilitating too. How did you move past those moments, and what do you do to keep yourself from falling too deep into imposter syndrome now? In moments when I face imposter syndrome, I try to step back and reframe my thoughts. When I am doing something difficult or new, I often find myself thinking “I’m too young for this” or “I don’t know what I’m doing.
When I first started Catcalls of NYC, I sometimes questioned if it was truly going to make an impact. For the first few years of running the Instagram account, I only had a few hundred followers and I had to trust that I was doing something important without a lot of outside validation. I would even get harassed sometimes during the process of creating the street art.
I believe artists and activists are entrepreneurial by necessity. We are always forging new paths based on the stories we hear, current events that unfold, and injustices we witness. And typically, we are looking for sustainable ways to continue to create art. During college, Catcalls of NYC and Chalk Back were part of my education and done on a volunteer basis. Since graduating, I’ve been working to turn the grassroots movement into a viable nonprofit organization.
I’m part of a fellowship for young women leaders and relying on those in this fellowship for guidance has been really helpful and inspiring. Being able to share successes and failures with these womxn has also been a source of self care. Moreover, the other activists involved in Chalk Back have become a huge support system. We are connected around the globe and provide each other an amazing community of solidarity while doing this work.
Globally, I want to transform Chalk Back into a sustainable organization, where everyone involved can have access to resources and funding. Building capacity within Chalk Back and finding funding for the volunteer-based work we are doing is a priority going forward.
