It seems most Fortune 500 companies have finally realized that diversity in the workplace is essential in order to have innovation. It’s unfortunate that organizations do have to focus on it, but usually, things that are measured and monitored are those that get better.
I realized after starting my business that there are organizations out there that look like me: minority-owned, women-owned. I became a member there. I had to learn how to do business with people who look like myself. That might sound strange, but it was different for me. I wasn’t used to working with women; now, more than 50% of my workforce is women! It’s been an interesting transition. Initially, when I started in business, I did 90% of all job functions myself.
I encourage everyone to have some form of their own business. Whatever it is, you need to understand what it’s like — what commerce is like from a personal perspective. It makes you a better employee to have some form of creative outlet and monetizing that.What responsibility, if any, do you feel leaders have regarding building diverse workplaces?Leaders can’t just hire a diverse team and call it a day.
