The iconic downtown office structure will close for two years as renovations to convert it to a 244-unit apartment building begin this summer.

Katy Garza has lived in San Antonio since the late 1970s and has been fascinated with the Tower Life Building for years but had never been inside it. When she heard that the public could tour the historic downtown structure ahead of a lengthy renovation, she was excited for the chance to finally see the majestic 31-story building with its distinctive green roof up close. “I always thought it was such a beautiful building,” Garza said.

The custom of wearing a white carnation on Mother’s Day weighs on this holiday During a recent afternoon, a security guard monitoring building cameras from his front desk post greeted the occasional passerby. If not for the paid tours of the building that have taken place over the past month, not many visitors would be walking through Tower Life’s gilded lobby as the building ushers in a new chapter.

Mark Twain elementary staff, students celebrate 100-year milestone The new owners’ vision of turning the office building into a mixed-use facility is a return to Tower Life’s roots. The building’s original owners embraced the mixed-use design long before it became a popular business concept in recent years. The city’s first Sears store took up Tower Life’s first six floors, according to historical accounts.
