The Ronald Kirk Bridge was awash in silence for a few seconds of totality. Soon, the crowd of more than 600 broke out laughing, singing, crying and dancing. Couples hugged and kissed, and children stared open-mouthed at the sky.A thick line of gray clouds that covered spectators’ view for several minutes of totality parted slightly, revealing for the first time a clear sight. Dallas was the largest U.S. city in the path of totality that ran northeast from Mexico and crossed a large swath of the Texas Hill Country before continuing on to parts of the Midwest, Northeast and Canada. That made the region ground zero for viewers who traveled from as far as France, Germany and Colombia — and from around the U.S. — to catch a glimpse of the moon’s shadow.
