A Torrance police officer who has been linked to a scandal involving cops’ exchanging of racist text messages was charged Friday with assault in connection with an on-duty shooting, law enforcement officials told The Times.
A short time later, prosecutors said, the man returned armed with a knife. It was not immediately clear if he threatened anyone or brandished the weapon, but Chandler allegedly fired “several rounds” as the man walked away, prosecutors said. The man was injured but ultimately survived.Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are charged with lying to cover up an on-duty assault, prosecutors say.
Friday’s criminal filing marked the first time Gascón has brought charges against a police officer in an on-duty shooting after sweeping into office last November by campaigning on the need for police accountability. In recent months, Gascón has alsofor falsifying police reports or abuse on-duty.
