Updates from Nashville's WPLN: The system for sending tornado alerts to smartphones worked correctly — but 'do not disturb' mode may have blocked many of them. The storm wrecked 400 homes and 200 businesses along a 52-mile path.

A home in North Nashville near Fisk University was one of nearly 400 to be destroyed in Davidson County in the storms that swept through the area on Tuesday.Metro officials are saying that nearly 400 homes and 184 businesses were destroyed, with those numbers expect to continue to rise as inspectors work their way through the disaster zone.

But, he says, three times more utility poles were damaged in this storm than in 1998, with the highest number in North Nashville. He says that will delay the recovery. Health officials are also urging people who’ve lost power to throw out any food that might be spoiled. An additional public shelter has been opened at the Smith Springs Community Center. Shelters are also open at the Centennial Sportsplex, East Magnet High School and the Hadley Park Community Center.

WPLN my phone wasn’t on “do not disturb” — it was on vibrate. the alert did not make a sound like it normally would for things like amber alerts.

WPLN Not sure about other phones but iPhone alerts aren't blocked by DND unless you turn them off in settings/notifications.

WPLN I block my local station alerts, because I get unnecessary warnings, like it’s about to sprinkle. Alerts should be for emergencies.

WPLN I see nothing about cellular “do not disturb” blocking official Tornado Warnings mode mentioned in the article provided. If true, critical to disseminate this widely. A Preparedness advocate & resident of “wildfire land”, IDNK this and doubt that others do.

WPLN I got my update two days later at 12pm

WPLN If you sent them via normal txts, yes. Which is incredibly stupid. If you used the emergency alert system like you're supposed to, those are immune to DND mode...
