Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he opposed plans for a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, saying the independent probe would be counterproductive and shortsighted

WASHINGTON—House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he opposed plans for a bipartisan commission to investigate, saying the independent probe would be counterproductive and shortsighted.

Mr. McCarthy said the commission would be too narrowly focused on what happened on Jan. 6. He said the commission should also examine other acts of political violence, such as the attack on a Republican congressional baseball practice in 2017, the death of a Capitol police officer who was rammed by a car April 2, and “political violence that has struck American cities.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also has resisted a commission focused solely on Jan. 6, arguing that its scope should potentially include riots during social-justice protests last summer. But Mr. McConnell hasn’t weighed in on the specific House legislation introduced by Messrs. Thompson and Katko.

She said his opposition was “disappointing but not surprising, the cowardice on the part of some on the Republican side, not to want to find that truth.” The legislation proposed by Messrs. Thompson and Katko would require a simple majority in the House and would need 60 votes to advance in the 50-50 Senate.Susan Walsh/Associated Press

Mr. Katko said in a statement Tuesday that he was confident he and Mr. Thompson negotiated a fair agreement that avoided politicizing the issue. He said he recognized there were differing views on the commission among Republicans, and he didn’t take it personally.

He has no spine and no moral compass.

Unfortunate that it happened. But for it to have happened and not to have a bipartisan investigation sends a message that our Nation is weak, it’s ok for our adversaries to storm the Capital it’s business as usual. This Nation must heal the right way rite now.

You need to ask him what is he afraid will come out of the commission report?

Cons can run, but they can’t hide.

Translation: knows that there are HouseGOP members who were not only supporting the insurrection, but involved in it.

Conrgressman McCarthy, if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

Bullshit.

Note to WSL: A bipartisan commission cannot run an ‘independent probe’

Can you say guilty?

Minority Leader knows a true commission is going to end up pointing fingers at Trump, much of the HouseGOP and the GOPLeader himself. No wonder he so wants to avoid it.

I don’t think we should listen to one of the coconspirators when deciding to investigate an attempted coup of our government. GOPLeader doesn’t want to be asked the question he refuses to answer under oath. He is a coward who sees his number coming when an investigation happens.

He did say a investigation by capitol riot supporters should proceed. He picks Trump and Rudy to investigate.

No, far reaching as GOP members and staff will be outed for their communications with terrorists on and before January 6th.

Regardless of how you feel about the politics here, US govt commissions are batting like 0% in their analysis.

As counterproductive and shortsighted as the Benghazi hearings?

now, if this had just been about Benghaaaaazi...

Big government doesn't care when you burn down your city, they only care when you come for theirs.

Good point?
