Top Pentagon officials are strongly pushing back against criticism that the Defense Department misled the public on the Afghanistan War

” this month, which allege that the Pentagon lied to the public about the amount of progress being made in the Afghanistan War and continued to tout successes despite knowing the war had become unwinnable. While the name may evoke memories of the Pentagon Papers, a trove of documents published by The New York Times in 1971 that showed the government had lied to the American public about the Vietnam War, Milley said the reports aren't the same thing.

Milley, who served as the deputy commanding general of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan during one of his three tours to the country, said the thousands of men and women who have died in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001 did not die in vain because troops have accomplished their top mission: to prevent another terrorist attack against the United States launched from Afghanistan. He also stressed that he always gave honest assessments when he was serving in the country.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper also pointed to the high level of oversight the war has faced, including media reporting from the front lines, inspector general investigations and visits from lawmakers. Esper said he visited the country on a congressional delegation in the fall of 2001 while working as a professional staff member on Capitol Hill.

“This has been very transparent. It’s not like this war was hiding somewhere,” Esper said during the press conference. “Some type of insinuation that there’s been this large-scale conspiracy is just, to me, ridiculous.” The Army general acknowledged the war would not end with the signing of a surrender document as past conflicts have, but also said this is something about which top officials have been transparent since nearly the beginning of the war. Instead, the conflict will end only when the Afghan government negotiates a peace agreement with the Taliban, especially because the terrorist group maintains some level of popularity among rural Afghans.

You would have to be an idiot not to realize That the US Army and Secretary of State have no idea how to build a new country.😲😲😲🤔🤔🇺🇸🇺🇸

And you ask yourself why the DoD is staying silent when their commander in chief is going cuckoo. Because they prefer the cuckoo president in Trump to make things easier for them and their faulty decisions based on lies.

Failed The Maurya Empire of ancient India, Alexander the Great of Macedon, Umar, an Arab Caliphate, Genghis Khan of Mongolia, Timur of Persia and Central Asia, the Mughal Empire of India, various Persian Empires, the British Empire, the Sikh Empire, the Soviet Union, now the U.S.

All I can say is.

This sounds eerily familiar.

Don’t you find your jacket a bit cumbersome? In the Freudian sense.

morgfair It was and is a war to nowhere. An unnecessary war of choice with no plan for victory and no exit strategy. Not one American should be dying in the s..t hole that is Afghanistan. Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq - all unnecessary wars and humanitarian disasters.

Of course a General would deny that officials lied. They always deny the lies.

Oh no...here's that name again, 'Afghanistan,' which caused so much consternation from last night's debate. For those who are unsure about it, here's a link to hear the correct pronunciation.🙏🏽

We are only there so someone else can make a lot of money off of tax payers. So can we just bring the troops home and stop with the bs of wasting our money.

What, military leaders lied? Next you're going to tell me the sky is blue and ice is cold. Serve for a few years and you get used to being treated like a mushroom.

Of course they did.

no shit us brits are in full knowledge of that when we taken are grave grave memorial with us .

The government lied? Shocking.

This is not news. The American public knew from day one the war was not winnable and truth to tell, we weren't there to win a war, we were there to kill bin Laden and decimate al Quaida and we did that. Time to get out of there.

Nonsense, anyone paying attention knew everything they 'revealed'. After the first article, the washingtonpost got it right. Also check out Amb. Crocker's op ed.

Lol. Ok boomer.

Sounds like the Pentagon is taking a page out of the Donald's denial Book.... through the lie out there and hope it sticks

Meanwhile the top brass are running like rats, 5 resignations in one week 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
