“Farmer’s.” And that’s OK with co-owner Clayton Klein. It’s an homage to the many names this building on North Main Street has carried since the Waldeck family bought it in 1950.and a Red & White, both of them full-on grocery stores. By the mid-’70s, the focus narrowed to a butcher shop, and the name changed to Farmer’s Meat Market. They added a retail barbecue shop sometime in the ’80s.
In 2006, Barret and Claire Klein took over Farmer’s. They kept the name for a few years, then changed it to Klein Smokehaus, where they processed deer brought in by local hunters, sold barbecue and freshly cut steaks, made sausage and did some business as a general store. As Boerne grew, the Kleins kept pace. To put it in perspective, Clayton Klein figures they went from processing 500 deer a year to 5,000.
Then the pandemic hit, and all hell broke loose. While grocery store meat cases sat mostly empty, Klein Smokehaus still had steaks, hamburger and sausage to sell, and business skyrocketed. Hunters stocked up with deer, and Klein’s processing numbers shot up to 6,000 a year.
The two fellow Aggies kept the momentum going with the butcher shop, the general store, the deer processing, the sausage operation and the retail barbecue. But it’s the barbecue that landed Klein Smokehaus on this list of the Top 10 Boerne Restaurants. a list drawn from more than 25 restaurant visits in this growing city 30 miles north of San Antonio.
This marks the third year we’ve surveyed the Boerne restaurant scene, and this new Top 10 represents a 40% turnover fromthe sign of a city with a growing appetite for the new and abiding affection for what came before. So go ahead and call Klein Smokehaus by its old name. They’ll answer either way. Because Boerne remembers where it came from.A Top 10 list isn’t a contest for who’s the fanciest. Take Mary’s Tacos.
