In many ways, the superhero genre would have looked different without shows like Smallville, especially when there wasn't yet a DC cinematic universe and before the MCU proved to the industry that comic book stories work on the big screen at a grand scale. Buffy2Ville recently shared a gallery of artwork depicting some of the Smallville actors as MCU heroes if they hadn't been cast in their respective DC roles. The artwork features Welling as Captain America, Michael Rosenbaum as Iron Man, Erica Durance as Black Widow, Kristin Kreuk as Scarlet Witch, and Justin Hartley as Hawkeye.
If Welling were to join James Gunn's DC Universe characters, he could take on a supporting role rather than play another superhero. The ideal situation would be to see Welling in Superman: Legacy, and literally live up to the movie's title by becoming a legacy actor, as David Corenswet becomes the big-screen's next Man of Tomorrow. On the other hand, having Welling join the MCU would likely spice things up for the actor by getting to take a swing at a different superhero franchise.
Time will tell if Welling ever joins the DC Universe or the MCU, especially as the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes have put all of Hollywood on pause. There is always the chance that, whenever the strikes are over, more movement will happen on Welling's Smallville animated sequel show that he had in the works, which would see him back as Superman. Until that day ever comes, fans can relive Welling's entire Smallville legacy on streaming or on Blu-Ray/DVD.
