The American Cancer Society recommends annual screenings for 45- to 54-year-olds. In addition, the ACR advises Black women to conduct a risk assessment and devise a screening strategy with a doctor when they are 25, Destounis said. Smith said that although Black women under 40 are more likely than their white counterparts to be diagnosed with breast cancer, the difference isn't large enough to warrant widespread screening.
