Along the way she performed in and directed about 30 plays, sang in the school choir, scored top marks on the tests she has so far taken for 11 advanced-placement classes, helped run a summer camp and held down a part-time job.

Even if we accept the SATs as the only criteria, a 1550 merely puts her in a pool with 8000+ other students. The schools listed accept around 2,000 a year, and it's often the same kids getting accepted. In that pool, her score doesn't stand out at all.

Similar test scores, top GPA, won statewide awards for music, Creative writing, and civics, competed in math teams at the national level, &had 14 extracurriculars including leadership. I was told flat out it wouldn’t get me into Harvard/Princeton/Yale/etc

It's better to go to a smaller/less prestigious college for your undergraduate degree where you'll get more direct contact with, and feedback from, the actual professors and not their TAs. This isn't a universal rule but it's a good rule of thumb. Try for Harvard for grad school.

She could have gone to a community college for two years and then applied to transfer. Ive had students who transferred to Berkeley, Columbia, Boston U, and their degree is identical to those who entered as freshmen.

If Stanford accepted applications ONLY from students with 1600 SAT scores and 4.0 GPAs, they’d STILL turn down half the applicants. There’s a good school for everyone.

It’s nothing to be ashamed of. My son had a 4.2 GOA and 98th percentile on the SAT and started an incorporated company at age 12 (pest removal, with emphasis on snakes), and has a rare bone disease that left him in a wheelchair and got him into NIH for internships. Rejected!

I was on a medical school admissions committee for 5 years. I can tell you that if she was Black, Hispanic, or Native American, she would likely have gotten accepted to multiple schools.

College admissions is a crap shoot. My daughter took a full load of AP courses thru high school, all As, all the extra curriculars. She was offered full rides(math major) to all the UC schools, but was turned down by USC, UW and CalTech. She's at UCLA. None of it makes sense

1550 these days on the SAT is not as meaningful as it once was, since the score has been re-centered at least twice since the 90s (inflated) and all the testing/coaching now available assure kids can pay to perform.

If she wanted to study biology, psychology, economics, or environmental science, she is among thousands and thousands of girls who are equally or more qualified based on many factors.

Many factors here - ranking of the high school, her essay quality and whether someone else locally is even more fabulous - most competitive colleges try to get students from as many states as possible, so a kid from an obscure state may have a better shot than Texas.
