Take-Two is reporting a whole bunch of good news for its earnings this week, as games like GTA 5 next gen, Red Dead Redemption 2 and WWE 2K22 have all exceeded the company’s sales expectations. But especially Wonderlands.

I too appreciated the setting and features like the Overworld map. I have been less enthused about the game’s post-release plans which included incredible sparse DLC drops that are singular dungeons, a far cry from traditional Borderlands meat and potatoes DLC. But this entire project was something Gearbox made from home over the course of the pandemic, and I don’t think anyone expect it to catch on quite at the level it did.

We know that Borderlands 4 proper is in the works, but the success of Wonderlands has me wondering if a full sequel to that game might be in the cards. If not, maybe then what elements people liked could be carried over to Borderlands 4 . In any case, given the sales of Borderlands 3 and now the performance of Wonderlands, the future of Gearbox and their loot shooter universe seems endless. Gearbox was recently acquired by Embracer Group, the place that just bought Eidos and Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix, though it continues to publish with 2K.

Maybe this will mean bolstered post-launch content for Wonderlands, a sequel, or maybe we’ll just get to hear about Borderlands 4 soon. But before any of that, they also have a movie coming out…
