Published 12:51 PM EDT Jul 24, 2019The dating app will be launching a"Traveler Alert" safety feature to iOS and Android in approximately 70 countries around the world, all of which have laws outlawing or"effectively criminilazing" LGBTQ status, according to a statement from the company. Such countries include South Sudan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Nigeria. .
Here's how it will work: Users who identify as LGBTQ won't appear on Tinder automatically when they open the app in one of these countries. Users living in these countries will see the same alert when they open the app for the first time. The company worked with the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Trans and Intersex Association to determine which countries to include as part of the alert.
Users will be able to decide whether they can stay hidden in that location or if they want to make their profile public. If they do opt to be shown, their sexual orientation or gender identity won't be shown on their profile until after they leave that location. People who want to learn more will be sent to ILGA's resources on sexual orientation laws.
In addition to launching a new sexual orientations feature as part of a partnership with GLAAD earlier this summer, Tinder motivated its users to contact senators to bring the Equality Act to the Senate floor.Millions of people are traveling to New York for WorldPride. Why are some opting to skip?
