Given the circumstances No. 1 Mount St. Dominic found itself in against No. 15 Cedar Grove in the Essex County final, Mount head coach Rob Stern is confident of several things, but one of the biggest — Mount teams of old may have folded under the pressure or taken the situation for granted.
“The thing is we stayed calm. We gave up three runs and got punched in the face, but we came right back,” Mount coach Rob Stern said. “We didn’t get down on ourselves or feel sorry and even tonight, when Fernandez, you start thinking maybe tonight isn’t your night. And because this team is young, you think they’re not there, but they’re mentally tough.”The first was on Saturday when Olivia Bibbo roped a bases-clearing double to tie the game at 3-3.
And Bibbo wasn’t the only senior who helped Mount overcome a deficit. Even in a game where the team gave up seven runs and committed five errors, it was also the play of Monmouth commit Gianna Stern, who gave Mount a 7-6 lead after a two-run single up the middle in the third, and Seton Hall commit Naya Martinez, who saved the game on defense several times, that kept Mount in it.
“It never gets old because every year you’re a new group,” the elder Stern said of the win. “I’ve got three great seniors but I start five freshmen and have six new kids with Jillian and for us to be where we are right now and do what we did, it’s a tribute to their work ethic and their love of the game respect they have for the tradition of the Mount and what it’s all about.”
For as important as the seniors were to the success though, Martinez pointed out that the freshman were just as crucial and add a different layer to the Lions. “It bothered us all that we lost last year, but give them credit. Nikki does a great job over there and Cayce is a tough out,” Stern said. “They’ve got a quality team right there.”
