SAN ANTONIO - Doctors say ticks usually pop up during the warmer months.
As kids spend more time outside, doctors say it's important to know the dangers of ticks. They're tiny but can be dangerous. Ticks are infamous for spreading Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Tick repellent, long sleeves and pants help keep you safe. Woods and spots with tall grass are favorite spots for these guys. If you're out hiking, biking, or walking the dog, sticking to the center of the trail is one way to avoid tick bites. Ticks perch on long leaves and branches, and then ponce on people and pets as they walk by. So when you get back inside, it’s a good idea to check your clothing, shoes, and backpack for ticks that might have hitched a ride.
The best way to remove a tick is using tweezers, and then to clean out the wound. Symptoms of a tick bite include fever, chills and rashes that appear circular or can resemble a bull's-eye. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife website, ticks don’t have true heads, just barbed mouthparts that they stick into the host. Ticks create a cement-like substance to glue themselves on and can’t leave until they fill up, even if they want to. Some types of ticks can live up to 200 days without food or water. And some kinds of ticks can live up to two years.
