Diversity in media matters because it affects the quality of news reporting and the range of stories told. Reporters and editors are overwhelmingly white and male, for example,report, found that only 37 percent of bylined news articles and opinion pieces regarding reproductive rights and related issues were written by women. Reports on these issues is overwhelmingly male dominated because the industry is.
“Many stories and journeys are universal, but representation in the media has been limited to a certain subset of people, and we want to help to change that. In our beauty content, for example, we represent people of all shapes, sizes, skin tones, hair types, etc. I want everyone reading our content to find something that speaks to them,” says Sugar.her aim was to create a company made up of a wide range of voices and perspectives.
Showcasing diversity through storytelling is something Sugar is doing across all their platforms. For example, this year’s Popsugar Not only does this commitment to diversity increase the quality and range of media content but ultimately Sugar says this positively impacts the bottom line. “Inclusion is great for the world but specifically for us as a business, because we see higher engagement around our content when people feel like it applies to them. Brands are thrilled to see that and also respond to that. They appreciate that they can reach more people,” she says.
