She knows this is a departure from how things usually work in the state. “It was very hard for people in the political establishment to rally around [me and Teachout], even though many people told us off the record that they wanted to very much, and they were so grateful that we were challenging him, et cetera,” Nixon continues. “What really happened when we ran is people who were really, really progressive and far-reaching in their vision supported us.
Teachout had a similar experience running against Cuomo in 2014. She recalls being heartened by how many people across the state seemed ready to give up on the status quo. “It's like we have these two visions of New York politics. For a long time, it's been Cuomo's New York, and that means austerity. That means lies. And that means abusing power,” she says.
Aboushi is looking to take over from incumbent Cyrus Vance Jr., who is not seeking reelection after 10 years in the seat. “Every district attorney of Manhattan, and on the other end of that vision has been people of color,” says Aboushi. “These are extremely important positions with real impact on our communities and everyday New Yorkers.… We haven't had a seat at that table.
