Posting his letter on Twitter, Sprowls urged districts to use every available resource “to locate these missing children. We have a moral obligation not to allow any of these children to slip through the cracks of the system.
A digital equity report by the National Education Association found that an estimated 25% of school-age children do not have broadband access or a web-enabled device such as a computer or tablet. According to the NEA’s report, most of the children lacking appropriate technology are from low-income and minority families, with “this inequality is systematically related to the historical divisions of race, socioeconomic status, and geography.”
Chronic absence, which is defined by the U.S. Department of Education as missing at least 15 days of school, has increased substantially, particularly among vulnerable populations, and students of color, according to Hedy Chang, who directs Attendance Works, an initiative targeting chronic absenteeism.In some districts, student absences have doubled during the beginning of the pandemic.

Probably this will go over like a lead balloon, but I'm thinking we need to do a complete reset and start the kids' studies, in person, where they left off last year. Everyone would be a year behind where they'd be in normal times, but these are not normal times.
Online is no substitute for actual school. I had 5 kids doing online and half the time the screen blacked out or teachers were putting them on hold 20-40 minutes at a time. If you're working & can't babysit your kid you cant be sure they arent even paying attention.

Kids have been back in school in Texas since last September...public schools... No mass casualties of teachers or students. Sounds to me like someone just wants to get paid to sit at home to me..and parents who were forced to stay home as well decided to homeschool..

While most of private schools were open, all of the pubic schools were closed due to the teachers union’s decision not to open to secure the safety of its members. All parents are surely concerned with their children’s education as well as their well-being.
