I grew up on a Air Force base and live in a base town. Living on base- free. Rent-30% discount. Medical-free. Utilities-15% discount. Restaurants-discounts. Stores-discounts. USAA insurance-cheapest rates. Even banking is cheaper.

Nothing new. In the 60’s during Vietnam my navy husband & I would collect bottles on the beach for money. The local store would let us charge food occasionally.

Moral- junior enlisted troops don’t make enough to support a family. So- they should wait a ‘whole’ 2-3 years, pick up E-5, and maybe THEN think about starting families. Most 20 year olds aren’t in a position to support a family.
The complex issues that military families face contribute to food insecurity, such as lack of childcare, spouse unemployment, and out-of-pocket expenses. Nobody should be hungry in this country, including military families.
