'It's really important for a show like Gossip Girl to be sexually liberating and explorative when it comes to identity and [sexual] preference.'

"We're so lucky to be living in a time right now where the status quo and the social structure we've been conditioned to believe in and adopt as individuals has been hugely taken into question," Thomas Doherty, who plays pansexual teen Max Wolfe, tells.

Case in point: His dynamic with high school sweethearts Audrey and Aki . There's a simmering tension between the three of them, the question of will-they-won't-they lingering in each scene. Of course, they already have to an extent. Audrey and Aki have both already hooked up with Max. "Audrey is looking for some fun in her life," Emily says. "She's very much by the books when it comes to the things that she loves, like classic literature and her favorite restaurants… She tries to keep things structured in her life because of some hazy stuff going on in her family life." The stress of her parents' very messy divorce, and her mom's alcoholism is causing prim and proper Audrey to act out. "Things start to get muddy and really confuse her.
