Girl Ultra Keeps the Nineties Alive in ‘Ruleta’ Video

Have you ever wondered what New Jack Swing would sound like in Spanish? Say no more: in her latest single, “Ruleta,” or “Roulette,” Mexico City R&B starlet Girl Ultra retroactively freaks a classic soundflair. “Luck dances around me,” she trills, alluding to her blossoming career — but also the invisible, painstaking work she does to sustain it.

In her self-directed video, what starts as a funky Nineties party montage ends with an attack by rabid party goers, who hungrily claw at her assorted costume gems. According to a press statement, the scene is a metaphor for what she describes as a “problematic” experience within the Mexican music industry.

— in the latest clip for “Ñe Ñe Ñé,” a rootsy plena number, performed solely with a percussion ensemble. The Latin world’s leading avant-romantic, Helado Negro, lends his silky croon to Ecuadorian DJ-producer Riobamba in their new track, “Hacia Tu” — which features in the new immigrant benefit compilation,. True to her genre-agnostic style, Riobamba designs a slippery, techno-dembow audioscape for Helado Negro to ramble in. The result is a lush, electric garden of sound.

What Matters This Week in the 2020 RaceEarly this week, Sen. Elizabeth Warren held a rally in New York, a state that is nearly impossible for Democrats to lose. On the same day, President Trump held a rally in New Mexico, a state that will be hard for Republicans to win. Those moves reveal much about how the two parties see next year’s presidential race. Warren 2020!! As he should . We cant guarantee that one man could lie and hurt the already hurting Warren has a 70% white base, professional, not working class, she is the candidate of meritocracy, she doesn't have a movement. Trump would defeat her. This is not our nominee.
