Jessica B. Harris combines her two favorite summer fruit — watermelon and tomato — for the ultimate summer salad.

Harris chops peak-season tomatoes in her Oak Bluffs home.I am a relative newcomer to watermelon; for decades, I would ignore it, finding it cottony and lacking in taste. Then, I had a truly ripe sweet one from the vendor who used to park his car across the street from my home in Brooklyn, open his trunk and put out his sign that said, “Watermelon, sweet like your woman!” One day, he’d forgotten his knife and I loaned him one. He, in turn, offered some of his watermelon. I tasted it.

I was all the more pleased when I learned that watermelon originated on the African continent in southern Africa with the first watermelon harvest recorded in Ancient Egypt almost 5,000 years ago; it was so popular there that watermelon seeds were found in King Tutankhamen’s tomb.

Bacon and Egg Salad Sandwich with Dukkah and Peppery Greens Recipe on Food52My favorite summer sandwich, the classic egg salad, just got a whole lot better. A few months ago, I stumbled on Arabella Boxer’s “The Spice Book.” In it I discovered the most marvelous spice, seed and nut blend, called “dukkah,” as well as Ms. Boxer’s excellent recommendation to eat it with eggs. I’ve been hooked, and I mean really hooked, ever since. This recipe is for a basic egg salad, which I make using my homemade garlic and mustard aioli. (If you don't have the time, or just don't feel like making aioli, don't worry - a good mayo will do just fine.) A fat pinch of dukkah and a small handful of peppery watercress or arugula utterly transform it. Or just use whatever greens you have on hand. Vegetarians take note - this is a killer sandwich without the bacon. Either way, enjoy!! ;o) Assuming you can buy Dukkah and dont have to make it yourself? I love Dukkah but never would have thought of adding it to egg salad. Great idea. Going to check out the recipe.

Octopus and Potato Salad (Insalata di polpo e patate) Recipe on Food52Octopus and potato salad is a favorite dish all along the Italian coast. You can find it in practically every Tuscan and Ligurian port. Cleaning the octopus involves removing the eyes, beak, and innards, and rinsing under cold water—this is often already done when bought from a fishmonger or at a supermarket or if you have bought it frozen, but at my fresh-off-the-boat fisherman’s shop front, they are just as they were pulled out of the water. Freezing the fresh octopus helps to tenderize it; alternatively, you can buy it already frozen and defrost it at home. If you have a larger octopus, 45 to 60 minutes of cooking usually suffices. Baby octopus cooks in a much shorter time; 20 minutes can be plenty. Once cooled and chopped into pieces, it makes a delicious salad with potato, thinly-sliced celery, a handful of parsley, and a dressing of extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice (if you like, black olives go nicely here, too). Eat it room temperature or chilled—on a hot day, this is one of my very favorite meals. This is demonic. Sorry but no. Apparently Food52 has not seen My Octopus Teacher.
