his first new novel in five years, and it’s an absolute belter. Set largely over one stagnant, sticky summer in the nineties, it’s a modern, suburban take on, where the Montagues and the Capulets have been replaced by self-doubt and peer pressure.
Our hero, Charlie Lewis, is remarkable in his unremarkableness. Not one of the clever kids. Not one of the really popular kids. He doesn’t do drama. He doesn’t excel in sports. He’s not the class clown or the class bully. His aim is not to draw too much attention to himself, to “take up less space in the world.” He hangs out with a gang of equally unremarkable boys, though they lack Charlie’s self-awareness and fail to see how ordinary they are.His parents have divorced.
The action starts as Charlie’s school days are ending. He’s dreading his exam results and the uncertain, unspectacular future that they’ll bring and in the meantime, he works in a garage where he has a scratchcard scam running with his best mate Martin Harper.changes.
