'Every immigrant right now is going through a lot of fear that we're going to have another presidency in 2021 that is going to be even worse for us.' –ErikaAndiola DontLookAway

what’s behind the group’s poignant statement in an interview on Sunday.

“We're hoping that people can see this and be reminded. As voters are walking by, ready to go caucus in the evening, [we hope] that they are reminded,” Andiola explained. “There's a hashtag on the cage that says ‘Don't look away.’ That's exactly what we want voters [and] the American public to do, to not look away and to remind themselves that, yes, as humans and as Americans, we're going through a lot of issues, but we also cannot forget our immigrant brothers and sisters.

The group is hoping its installation can refocus attention on immigration, given the lack of consideration the issue has received in the presidential race recently. “One of the things that has been really troubling for us is seeing that immigration has not even been an issue in the last two [Democratic] debates,” Andiola said. “So, for us, we want to really remind voters, we want to remind America that this is still an issue, that kids are still in cages, that there's still people right now who are in detention centers who are in the other side of the border in Mexico waiting for their asylum case to be heard.

“I hear a lot of pundits say that is because Iowa is one of the states that might not have a lot of [interest in] this issue because it's more than 90% white,” she told“Yes, there's a lot less diversity in Iowa, but it doesn't mean that there are no immigrants. There's an immigrant community here; there's an immigrant community in every state of this country.”
