Celebrity Cruise Line president and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo and some of the line's womenofficers, including Captain Kate McCue , the first American woman to be named captain of a cruise ship.“When I was appointed to this role five years ago, I felt like I had an opportunity and an obligation and a responsibility to do something about balancing the gender in our industry,” says Lutoff-Perlo. “I thought, ‘This is my chance to really make a difference.
And what a difference Lutoff-Perlo has made. “The lovely thing for us is that we're the only [cruise line] that can do this because we've been focused on this for almost five years now,” says Lutoff-Perlo. “We have enough women across our entire brand where we can completely ‘man’ the bridge with women and we have women leaders in every aspect of our operation—even our chief of security is a woman, an Israeli woman.
Captain McCue says she is looking forward to meeting all of the women on this historic cruise. “I've worked with a few of them before, but to have all of us in one place at one time—and in such a commanding presence—is going to be an overwhelming experience, not only for each other, but for the guests as well,” says McCue.
Speaking of inspiring the next generation, we also got Lutoff-Perlo to share her best career tips for getting ahead.“Whether you're in travel or any field, I think there's a perception that if you don't start at the top, you don't get to the top or close to the top,” says Lutoff-Perlo. “Dreaming big is really important but a lot of people—women especially—hold themselves back because they don't see themselves in certain roles.
