After a phone call with Daniel Boulud and other famous chefs, Trump called for expanding tax deductions for business meals and entertainment as a way to revive the restaurant industry

WASHINGTON—Daniel Boulud’s restaurants are largely shuttered because of the coronavirus pandemic, but his latest recipe—an easy-to-grasp pitch paired with a dash of celebrity—put a dormant tax-policy idea at the forefront of President Trump’s mind.

Three times this week, Mr. Trump called for expanding tax deductions for business meals and entertainment as a way to revive the hard-hit restaurant industry after stay-at- home orders are lifted. His proposal followed a phone call with Mr. Boulud and other famous chefs Sunday.

Got to open them up first

Last I checked restaurants were doing great pre virus. This is an expensive and not helpful idea.

get rid of all taxes

wtrh can deliver meals, you can write them off , support 2 businesses at once! lots of potential here!

Celebrities need to step up!!!

The deduction should be restored. Taxation discourages behavior. This will help all restaurants to get back to financial health quicker. Many thousands of restaurants across the country are small businesses, but significant employers.

Business meals for sheltered at home?

DanielBoulud Is this the real story?

This is singularly the stupidest idea floated about saving this vital industry to-date.

Ready to use it! Several of my restaurant clients are suffering. I'm already buying take-out from them, but being able to deduct 100% of the cost instead of just 50% would certainly provide incentive to myself and others to buy more. The .gov does not need our money, we do!

JFC. Every dickdag is dipping their tiny tip into the taxpayer trough. It‘s free money! Come and get it.

1980’s business model.

Everyone is now no one

This isn't going help mom and pop restaurants But it will certainly help the finance crowd who are sad they couldn't deduct a $150 lunch at Daniel

It never should have been removed. Trump made deductions horrible for the lower middle class.
