Not only have the Knicks been unable to convince superstars to sign in New York, but there likely won't be a player worthy of max money in 2020 (assuming Anthony Davis re-signs the monster contract the Lakers will offer him).

With nearly half the roster on non-guaranteed contracts, New York can easily clear upwards of $50 million in cap space this offseason. Yet, what is the benefit of having all that cash to spend if the Knicks aren't able to use it to improve their team significantly? First and foremost, it's important to note that the 2020 free agent crop is expected to be barren.

The Knicks, like every other team in the league, are well aware of the incredible free-agent class of 2021, which will potentially include the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James, Paul George, Jrue Holiday and Rudy Gobert, et al.

The Heat, unexpectedly near the very tip of the East, would like to upgrade their roster and get the most out of this season, while also freeing up some flexibility to make moves this summer. How much would Pat Riley and company be willing to pay to part ways with Waiters and/or Johnson? Currently 15 games under .500, the Hornets aren't good enough to compete for a playoff spot, but likely not bad enough to land a top lottery pick.

Obviously, the Jazz view themselves as legit championship contenders this season, so they have to be careful. However, the Knicks could send back a quality backup point guard in Elfrid Payton, who is averaging seven assists and five boards over the Knicks last seven games. And, over the final two months of the 2018-19 campaign, Payton averaged 11.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 9.3 assists in 32.3 minutes per contest.
