“They’re taking way too long, and while conducting this review they have not nominated someone,” said Mark Montgomery, a senior adviser to the Cyberspace Solarium Commission and senior fellow at Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. “So they are very much slowing down the development of the NCD office.”
She added: “We are in the midst of a thorough and whole-of-government 60 day review regarding Solar Winds lessons learned, which includes consideration of how the new federal National Cyber Director entity will be structured in light of these lessons learned. Like Congress, we are committed to the defense of the nation’s cybersecurity. We understand the intense interest in the outcome of this review. However, this work is too important to rush and we must get it right for the American people.
Another major issue is turf — specifically, how to structure the position so that it doesn’t conflict with the Deputy National Security Advisory for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Nueberger, who is currently the senior-most adviser to the president on cyber issues. “They are like oil and water,” said one former national security official involved in the discussions, referring to Easterly and Neuberger. “They’re both professionals. But it is true that they do not get along.”
This is great. Failed Director Krebs stated erroneously that the 2020 elections were the most secured elections ever. Unbeknownst to him, the Russians and Chinese were inside our networks for 2 years. 🤣
It just goes to show how important the aspects of cyber security are and how little politicians know or understand (and by that extent how little they care) about cyber security problems
