Dogs may prefer electric cars over gas-powered vehicles, new study suggests

A dog hangs outside a car window as they wait their turn to vaccinations at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah, Thursday, June 2, 2020. The Montgomery County Animal Services distributed 1,800 vaccines during the event, double the amount they distributed compared to their first event.suggests electric cars and trucks may be more comforting to canines than internal combustion engine vehicles.

“Our results clearly show that dogs seem to be more relaxed in EVs, particularly when looking at behavioral traits, such as restlessness,” said Daniel Mills, professor of veterinary behavioral medicine at the University of Lincoln, in the United Kingdom, in a release. “Additionally, an interesting and somewhat unintended revelation from the study came from the dogs we identified as having potential symptoms associated with travel sickness.

Mills conducted the study with CarGurus, the online vehicle sales site. It has not been accepted into a peer-reviewed journal but the company announced the findings Wednesday in a release,To conduct the experiment, Mills drove 20 dogs around in both a conventional car and an electric one, using gasoline-powered and electric Volkswagens and Hyundai models of the same style.

According to the findings, dogs broke their laying position — getting up to strut or fidget — 50 percent more frequently in a gasoline or diesel powered car. Officials attributed the change to vibration and noise.Though the study is new and far more examination is warranted, with electric cars increasing in terms of demand and supply, the dog days could be upon us.
