Scientists looking at excrement from snakes in the Galápagos Islands discovered they are cannibals that eat each other when stressed or hungry.
Teeth and skin fragments in the feces of the snakes were determined to belong to members of the same species. Luis Ortiz-Catedral, who led the study, which began in 2018, details fragments of snakeskin in 11 samples; one of which had 31 teeth and remains of skin. "We are only beginning to understand the trophic relationships of these snakes, which will help us conserve them in the long term." The results of the findings were published in the journal The Herpetological Bulletin.
